Dear Parent(s),
Welcome to another fantastic year at Southmoor.
As we begin the new school year, I would like to introduce you to the 100-Mile Club®.
The 100 Mile Club was started 24 years ago by Kara Lubin, a California
teacher in the Corona-Norco Unified School District. The 100-Mile Club is now
a non-profit organization whose sole mission is to provide to all individuals the
opportunity to experience fitness and TRUE personal success by
Accepting The Challenge of running (or walking) 100 miles at school during a single school year.
We will begin the morning of September 6th, on the upper field track or using
the school hallways, in the event of inclement weather. Students may jog
anytime between 8:00 am and 8:45 am, Monday through Friday.
When your child reaches 25 miles, he/she will be presented with a
fantastic t-shirt that is designed to show off accomplishments throughout the year.
We will also offer mile credits to students who participate in recognized local fun runs/walks. Yay!!
Through the journey toward 100 miles, your child will practice personal
goal setting, team spirit, perseverance, poise, confidence, and honest self-evaluation.
As your child reaches other "mile" stones, we all celebrate together.
When your child reaches 100 miles, he or she will be awarded with a beautiful gold medal
at our Year-End Medal Ceremony where every participant will receive a special certificate celebrating their total miles run.

Technology Meetings at Southmoor Elementary!
After meeting with the district about internet use and technology procedures, Southmoor Elementary School
has set up a schedule for the new Technology Policy Task Force.
A group of faculty members as well as parents who will help develop a technology plan for Southmoor and our students.
The next step is to communicate the meeting dates/times for parents to attend these meetings.
Meetings will take place from 6:30-7:30PM on:

Wednesday, 9/28
Wednesday, 10/5
Monday, 10/24 (during the Fall Forum)
People who have questions/concerns about the Southmoor Technology Policy,
but who cannot come to the meeting, can fill out this
We will have an Iready Q&A for any parents who would like to receive more information
on our Iready online program.

Technology News
In a world where children are "growing up digital" it's important
to help them learn healthy concepts of digital use and citizenship.
Parents play an important role in teaching these skills.

Many thanks to our wonderful teachers, parents and community volunteers
who have taken the time to teach a Passion Project this year.
It's not too late to help. We still need volunteers to:
To teach one (1) or two (2) 45 minute class sessions twice a month
Share your passion and interests with students
Serve as substitute teacher
Fill in if a teacher is absent. Plans will be provided.
Prepare to spend one (1) hour with a small group to explore and create.
Teach one (1) forty five minutes class on a specific day
Consider teaching a "Mystery Project" that explores different topics each session OR teach students your favorite board game,
get out sidewalk chalk and play hopscotch or share your passion.

Gifted and Talented Testing
Testing for Gifted and Highly Gifted identification and for the HGT Magnet program must be applied for by filling out a nomination form.
Click on the Gifted and Talented Magnet Site Programming title and it will take you to the page with the nomination form.
It is suggested that you fill out the form and send it online rather than printing it and trying to deliver it by hand.
Nomination forms are due to the district by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5. No exceptions will be made.
Students may take the CogAt test multiple times during their school career.
It will be administered at Southmoor during a window period from November 1 to November 11 this year.
Our exact testing schedule has not been set. If you have questions you may
contact the district GT Office or Paul Schmidt, the Southmoor GT Coordinator.
CLUB AMIGOS
Club Amigos is back for another exciting year of Spanish enrichment!
It's a great opportunity for your children
to learn a foreign language, with classes that are fun and interactive.
This popular program is offered at the school on Thursday mornings.
Limited spots remain, but they fill up quickly.
