-Information for Parents(Please Read)
Parents/Guardians there is no adult supervision before 8:30AM.
Please do not drop off your students before that time.
If you would like to wait with them until 8:30 you are more than welcomed to.
*The gates in the back of the school are locked for safety reasons during the day.
They get opened at 8:30am and will be re-opened for dismissal at 3:40pm*
Also, a friendly reminder that students are NOT allowed to have their cell phones.
This includes in the morning during recess or breakfast.
Please remind your child they must keep cell phones in their backpack at all times.
Any phones found will be given to the main office.

Welcome back returning Southmoor families. It's always so nice to see you!
Welcome to all of our new families, too! I look forward to meeting you in the next few weeks!
Notes to Know
I follow the Colorado & Denver Public Schools art standards-based curriculum.
All students will be exposed to a wide variety of artists, cultures, art history, media and techniques.
Throughout the school year, students' artwork will be on display around the building.
Be sure to check out the halls in the next week or two!
I display student artwork in the community as well. If you know of a local business willing to display student artwork,
please use the email address listed below to contact me.
Lastly, in May, we will have our annual school-wide art show.
Every student (K through 5th grade) will have at least one piece of art on display during Southmoor Arts week!
It is sure to be a spectacular week!
Artist Of The Week
Returns for the 2016-2017 school year! J "Artist of the Week" is an opportunity open to all students in grades K-5th
to showcase their artwork for a week on a bulletin board in the art room.
Students may submit 6 to 8 pieces of two-dimensional artwork. Art may be work created here at Southmoor, a former school,
an art camp or after-school art class. If your child sews clothes, creates 3-D sculptures + models, photographs are best.
Other ideas for the AOTW board include poetry + short stories. Students that dance, act, or play instruments may
submit photographs of their art as well! Parents: please contact me via email if your child would like to participate
in AOTW so I can get him/her on the calendar.

Gifted and Talented Testing
Testing for Gifted and Highly Gifted identification and for the HGT Magnet program must be applied for by filling out a nomination form.
Click on the Gifted and Talented Magnet Site Programing title and it will take you to the page with the nomination form.
It is suggested that you fill out the form and send it online rather than printing it and trying to deliver it by hand.
Nomination forms are due to the district by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5. No exceptions will be made.
Students may take the CogAt test multiple times during their school career.
It will be administered at Southmoor during a window period from November 1 to November 11 this year.
Our exact testing schedule has not been set. If you have questions you may contact the district GT Office or Paul Schmidt, the Southmoor GT Coordinator.
If you have any questions about the HGT program there will be an informational meeting on
September 13th for any parents interested.

Art for life is Every Friday After School!
It's not too late to sign up for art class. Sign-up sheets are available in the main office!
First art class will be tomorrow from 4-5pm in the art room.

100-Mile Club
This school year, in place of the seasonal after school jogging club two days a week,
there is going to be a before school jogging club that will meet every morning, all year long.
Students may participate anytime between 8:00 am and 8:45 am.
Jogging will take place on the upper field track or in the event of inclement weather, inside using the hallways.
The quest begins September 6th but it is not too late to begin!
Students earn prizes at each 25-mile interval they reach, which includes a t-shirt, pencil, wristband and a gold medal!

I will handout registration information to students next week. There is a $10 fee.
We are in need volunteers to help register students, track student's laps and overall mileage,
handout prizes and update cumulative miles charts, which will be displayed outside of the gym, in the hallway.

Appropriate Footwear
HELP! Please send your child to school everyday with shoes appropriate for safe and efficient movement for the playground and in the gym.
It is common for students who incur injuries to be wearing inappropriate footwear. Sandals, crocks and boots inhibit a child's
ability to move safely and give their best effort.

Club Amigos is back for another exciting year of Spanish enrichment!
It's a great opportunity for your children
to learn a foreign language, with classes that are fun and interactive.
This popular program is offered at the school on Thursday mornings.

Many thanks to our wonderful teachers, parents and community volunteers
who have taken the time to teach a Passion Project this year.
It's not too late to help. We still need volunteers to:
To teach one (1) or two (2) 45 minute class sessions twice a month
Share your passion and interests with students
Serve as substitute teacher
Fill in if a teacher is absent. Plans will be provided.
Prepare to spend one (1) hour with a small group to explore and create.
Teach one (1) forty five minutes class on a specific day
Consider teaching a "Mystery Project" that explores different topics each session OR teach students your favorite board game,
get out sidewalk chalk and play hopscotch or share your passion.
